Phosphorus – A Polychrest

By Marge Roberts, BSN MSHP DAHom

Dr. Luc Chaltin, Newton’s founder and a leader in clinical homeopathy, believed that the clinical homeopathy approach is the best way to address the health challenges of today. The use of complexes facilitates the use of multiple remedies at one time, allowing multiple symptoms to be addressed simultaneously.

However, Dr. Chaltin also utilized single remedies as a complement in the clinical approach. He taught that if one experienced improvement but not total resolution of a condition in a lower potency complex, consider adding a symptom-specific single remedy in a higher potency to the regimen. Consider adding Phosphorus in a higher potency to potentiate the action addressing a specific symptom.

Phosphorus is a great single remedy to have on hand in a higher potency because it is a polychrest. A polychrest is a remedy which is indicated for many symptoms. In Murphy’s Materia Medica, the indications for Phosphorus cover nine pages; the well-known single remedy Arnica covers only four pages. Clarke’s Materia Medica devotes 21 pages to Phosphorus and only six to Arnica. Having a polychrest such as Phosphorus in your medicine chest allows you to be prepared for a variety of conditions.

According to traditional homeopathic practice, Phosphorus is indicated for anxiety and over-sensitivity (contained in the Newton Homeopathics Blues~Mood~Emotions & Stress~Tension complexes), excessive hair loss and dandruff (Newton’s Hair~Scalp complex) and self-limiting conditions related to the respiratory system such as nasal problems (Newton’s Cold~Sinus complex), laryngitis/hoarseness (Newton’s Throat Care complex), and cough and oppressed breathing (Newton’s Cough~Airway complex). It is indicated for gastro-intestinal issues (Newton’s Bowel~Digestive Care complex) such as heartburn (Newton’s Indigestion~Gas complex), hemorrhoids (Newton’s Hemorrhoids complex), nausea (Newton’s Morning Sickness~Nausea complex) and diarrhea (Newton’s Diarrhea complex).

In classical homeopathic practice, Phosphorus is also used as a single remedy for various conditions. When used alone as a single remedy at a higher potency, clinical homeopathy teaches that it should be preceded by a detoxifying complex such as the Newton Detoxifier to address the incidence of a healing aggravation.

Phosphorus is administered for conditions related to bleeding, such as excessive bleeding during menses, nose bleeds, persistent bleeding after tooth extraction and bleeding hemorrhoids. Physicians may also use Phosphorus for fever (Newton’s Fever-Infection complex) as a single remedy for fevers with burning heat, profuse sweating and a fast pulse or during childbirth for excess bleeding during childbirth.

Consider keeping a bottle of higher potency Phosphorus in your medicine cabinet. Without an expiration date, it can always be used when and if you need it. Use it as a single remedy or as a complement to a comprehensive complex. As a polychrest, remember it is indicated for multiple symptoms, so it can be used for multiple conditions.
